Travel video about destination Vienna in Austria. Vienna is one of the world's most beautiful, historic cities, brimming with nostalgia and with all the grand architecture of a once glorious empire, for three centuries it was home to the Austrian monarchy. The architectural image of the city is dominated by the Ringstrasse, a four kilometre long boulevard which encircles the centre of the city. It was under the supervision of Maria Theresia that the magnificent royal residence, the Schönbrunn Palace, was completed. More than 1,700 beautifully-preserved rooms afforded the large Imperial family much freedom of movement and its magnificent interior décor is one of the most lavish of its time. The Palace Grounds contain the outstanding Neptune Fountain and at the highest point, the Gloriette...

Vienna around 1900 witnessed a vital and anxious surge in art, design, literature and music. This creativity also inspired psychological investigations into the inner self and dreams, most famously by Sigmund Freud. The old Imperial city was transformed into a modern metropolis encircled by the cafés and cultural institutions of the new tree-lined Ringstrasse and beyond new elegant suburbs. As the acclaim surrounding Edmund de Waal's The Hare with Amber Eyes and the forthcoming National Gallery exhibition attests, the paintings of Gustav Klimt and the exquisite interiors of the Wiener Werkstätte designers resonate with the delights and dilemmas of our own age. ART & DESIGN EDUCATION IN TIMES OF CHANGE Looking back in history, we see that art education has repeatedly been exposed to all kinds of challenges brought on by political and societal changes. Today we face new historical challenges we never expected. Starting with the crash of the financial markets in summer 2008, the current global economic crisis is the worst the world has seen since the Great Depression of the 1930s. In 2015 the UNHCR counted more than a million migrants and refugees crossing into Europe driven by the conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea or Kosovo. For 2016, Ericsson predicts more than two billion smart phone users worldwide; by 2020 smartphones will account for as much as 80 percent of all mobile data traffic. In response to these intertwined phenomena of global...
Vienna after World War I faced devastating shortages of everything, especially housing. The City elected a socialist government, which built massive housing projects that provided not just places to live but laundries, clinics, day care, education and sports facilities. The buildings were solid and beautiful and established an ongoing tradition of quality public housing. Recorded December 9, 2016.
"Higher Education Should Nurture Students’ Creativity" (General Joint Session at IMCIC 2017) Professor Bernard Wallner University of Vienna, Austria Department of Anthropology and Department of Behavioral Biology Co-leader of the working group Anthropological Economics & Demography Abstract: Discussions on quality management in higher education lack mostly a significant variable, namely to “educate students to be creative or seek for innovation”. One crucial explanation could be researcher per se think they represent a community of highly creative people. This might be true because creativity can be seen as a fundamental natural feature of universities. However, Thomson Reuters reveals that the richest countries have the most innovative universities. Evolutionary biology shows that ...
